Couple with Down Syndrome Celebrate 22 Years of Happy Marriage: ‘Their Relationship Is Pure,’ Says Sister
Maryanne and Tommy Pilling are celebrating their 22nd wedding anniversary this year, and what makes this couple so special is that they’ve had to overcome many challenges — and even criticism — over the years, as they both have Down syndrome.
The duo, who first met at a local training center for people with learning difficulties, had been dating for about 18 months when Tommy asked Maryanne to marry him with a toy ring from a vending machine after her mother gave him her blessing.
A few months later, in July 1995, the couple tied the knot in a church ceremony in Essex surrounded by supportive friends and family.
Studies have suggested that cat ownership could be linked to certain mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, but researchers at University College London say they found no link between cat ownership and the development of psychotic symptoms.
Published in the medical journal Psychological Medicine, the new study is the first to prospectively look at childhood cat ownership and the infection of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii as a risk factor for psychosis.
House cats are known to be the primary host of T. gondii, which infects various warm-blooded animals (including humans) and causes a disease called toxoplasmosis.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 million people in the United States may be infected with the parasite. However, most individuals who develop toxoplasmosis experience few symptoms because their immune systems keep the parasite from causing illness.

What sound do meteors make? It might sound like a stupid question, but it’s actually rather surprising – and equally interesting, too.
The answer is that a meteor burning up in our atmosphere can produce the sound of rustling leaves or faint whispers to observers on the ground. The reason is due to the bright light produced as it burns up.
As explained in a recent article in Scientific Reports, led by Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, the process is known as photoacoustic coupling. When the meteor produces a bright light, lasting up to two seconds or more, the pulses of light can heat the surfaces of things on the ground, such as leaves, grass, dark paint, and even your hair.
